A guide to starting a website

Starting a website is rather easy, provided you have a good idea and follow this idea step by step. The first thing that has to be done to create a website is to choose a domain name. Your domain name can be anything; your own name, your company name or perhaps some words that best describe you and your company. Once the domain name is chosen you have to get it hosted. There are many inexpensive registrars and hosting services for your hosting purposes like GoDaddy.com. If you want, you can ask around for recommendations, and then compare the services offered and read the hosting services reviews to choose the best hosting company for you.

When creating a website, it is important that you decide on the theme or niche for your website. It’s no use trying to be a jack of all trades; if you are a writer specialized in insurance, then create your website on insurance. Don’t add your favorite recipes or children’s’ stories in them! If you have other spheres of Internet, you can set up additional domain names and websites for each major subject. Remember, to get the best placement in search engines, you should select one theme and build your site around that theme.

Now you have your theme, create at least five web pages that are related to your theme. If you are not versatile with HTML, you can use a WYSIWYG program, which is included as a free program in Netscape and Mozilla browsers. (WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get). WYSIWYG programs are also available online. Make sure that your web pages have an index html, which is your main/entry page, a page that talks about you and how to contact you, and at least three pages that describes your websites theme. It is better to create links in the website so that people can easily click from one page to another.

Once you have launched your website, start a newsletter or ezine to update people on your upcoming projects, the sites you have been published recently and new additions you have made to your sites. The Yahoo Groups are easy and free to manage, so you could join them, or use a free or low-cost service like Ezine Director. However, be careful not to do business with spammers, and that you maintain a good reputation.

Once your website is set, add a new web page every week. Make sure that each web page has valuable and interesting content that is at least 100 words long, but not more than 600 words. You could consider breaking your longer articles into two pages or more if required. Make sure that each web page has a link or two links to other pages or to another high-quality website. every page should also link back to your home page too.
